We are a group of six postgraduate students at the University of Sheffield who have organised the postgraduate colloquium in conjunction with the University's School of Languages and Cultures (SLC). Conformity and dissent are concepts which impact upon all aspects of human society and interaction. Authorities and norms are continually and inevitably established in all areas of culture and language, and the very nature of these inspires either observance or resistance within their individual contexts. Analysis of the complexities and parameters which govern these concepts can offer intriguing insights into the intricacies of human nature, and by extension, such analysis can serve as a framework by which to evaluate a diverse range of global tendencies. |
